Electrical Meter
An exterior electrical meter measures the electricity consumption of a home, providing utility companies with the data needed for billing purposes. Typically mounted on the exterior wall, it connects to the home’s electrical panel via a service entrance cable. The electrical meter must function accurately and safely, which depends on both proper installation of connecting components and maintenance of the surrounding environment.
Utility companies own and maintain the meter itself, while homeowners are generally responsible for its surrounding enclosures, the meter base, and the service mast or entry conduit.
Warrantability
Alberta New Home Warranty Standards:
2-Year Distribution Warranty: The electrical meter itself is not covered under the Alberta New Home Warranty, as it is owned and maintained by the utility provider. However, the electrical service components (e.g., meter base, conduit, and connections to the home) may be covered under the delivery and distribution systems warranty for up to two years.
Builder’s Warranty:
Builders typically warrant the installation of the electrical meter base and service connections for one year. This includes improper placement, misaligned connections, or poorly secured conduits, but excludes damage caused by misuse or weather-related issues.
Manufacturer’s Warranty:
The electrical meter itself generally falls under utility company jurisdiction, with replacement or repair at no cost to the homeowner, so manufacturer warranties do not apply to the homeowner.
Maintenance
Inspect the electrical meter area annually and after severe weather for signs of wear, damage, or obstruction.
Steps:
- Ensure a safe clearance zone around the meter (1 meter/3 feet of unobstructed space). Keep the area free from shrubs, fences, or other barriers.
- Inspect for visible damage to the meter base, conduit, or weather seals.
- Check the fastenings on the meter base and mast to confirm the structure is secure.
- Contact the utility company immediately for issues with the meter itself. For surrounding electrical components, consult a licensed electrician if any irregularities are found.
- For safety, avoid tampering with meter connections or enclosures.
Materials Needed:
Pruning tools, general cleaning supplies to clear the area, and flashlight for inspections.
Common Issues, Warrantability, and Repair Solutions
1. Meter Not Registering or Reporting Consumption
Warrantability:
- 1-Year Builder’s Warranty: Excluded unless related to improper connections at installation.
- Manufacturer’s Warranty: Responsibility lies with the utility provider.
Repair Solution:
- If within warranty: Contact serviceQ for evaluation of related electrical connections if applicable.
- If outside warranty: Notify the utility company to inspect, recalibrate, or replace the meter as necessary.
2. Loose or Damaged Service Mast or Meter Base
Warrantability:
- 1-Year Builder’s Warranty: Covered for one year if the issue results from improper placement or fastening.
- 2-Year Distribution Warranty: Covered for up to two years if caused by defects in installation.
Repair Solution:
- If within warranty: Contact serviceQ to inspect, secure, or replace the loose components.
- If outside warranty: Engage a licensed electrician to repair or reseat the service mast or meter base.
3. Water Infiltration into the Meter Base
Warrantability:
- 1-Year Builder’s Warranty: Covered for one year if improperly sealed installations are to blame.
- 2-Year Distribution Warranty: Covered under the distribution system category for up to two years if caused by poor installation or sealing defects.
Repair Solution:
- If within warranty: File a claim with serviceQ to assess and reseal the meter base or associated connections.
- If outside warranty: Contact a licensed electrician for resealing and to mitigate water damage.
4. Physical Damage to the Meter or Connections
Warrantability:
- 1-Year Builder’s Warranty: Excluded unless caused by incomplete or improper installation.
- Manufacturer’s Warranty: Excluded, as physical damage is outside the scope of product defects.
Repair Solution:
- If within warranty: Contact serviceQ if the damage has impacted related service connections or enclosures.
- If outside warranty: Notify the utility company to assess the meter itself and hire an electrician for repairs to surrounding connections.
5. Obstructed Access to the Meter
Warrantability:
- 1-Year Builder’s Warranty: Excluded unless installation defects contributed to an access issue.
- 2-Year Distribution Warranty: Excluded, as this is considered a maintenance issue
Repair Solution:
- DIY: Prune plants or remove snow, keeping a 1-meter (3-foot) clearance space around the meter to allow access.
- Professional: If modifications are needed, such as relocating the barrier (e.g., fences or walls), hire a contractor or professional landscaper.
